Battle in the Library
Main Story: session 3

     After finding the staircase down, the group decided that they were too beat up and worn out to safely continue, and agreed to set up camp nearby. They were able to spend this time camping to talk with Zelgadiss, who was interested in the unusual nature of Turk’s weapon. Turk did his best to explain what his world was like, but Zelgadiss, not understanding that these people were from an entirely different universe, simply assumed that he was talking about a land outside of the barrier that many of the kingdoms of this world had been trapped within until recently. As they talked, however, they began to notice a problem. Shimazu, having not expected to be away from the base for more than a few hours, had not brought any supplies with him, nor did Mr. Smith have any with him. Turkquoise had brought some snacks and water, but hadn’t expected to be gone for more than a day. Zelgadiss agreed that after they were finished in these ruins he would lead them to a nearby village where they could find some supplies. In the meantime, he gave Shimazu a piece of his rations, so that he at least wouldn’t starve. Mr. Smith didn’t bother eating anything. As Zelgadiss began to eat, he pulled down the cloth that had been covering his face, revealing a rather unusual sight. His skin was blue and appeared to have rocks embedded in it, plus his hair was stiff and sharp as needles and his ears were pointed. He quickly re-covered his face when Shimazu commented him on his appearance, and said that this was the reason he was here looking for lost knowledge, so that he could find a way to return to normal.

     In the morning they all felt rested, and Zelgadiss used another healing spell to bring Turk closer to full health. After packing up, they finally headed down the staircase, descending into the ruins’ deepest chambers. The stairs went down for a very long way, taking over a minute before it finally opened up into the massive grand library. This library was enormous, with a veritable maze of bookshelves covering not only the floor, but several overhanging balconies as well. On top of that, there were large clusters of glowing crystals jutting from the ceiling, providing easily enough light to read by. Turk and Mr. Smith decided to stay at the stairs to protect their escape route in the event that there were any guards or traps in the library itself, while Shimazu went to search with Zelgadiss, who told him to look for any books on transmutation, chimeras, or the like.

     As they were searching, Shimazu suddenly felt his foot become very cold and was stuck in place. He looked down to see that it had been frozen to the ground in a mass of ice. At the same time, Turk and Mr. Smith heard a sound and turned just in time to see a ball of flame flying at them, and they dove out of the way as it exploded between them. It was at this point that the party as a whole became aware of the presence of five large constructs, likely golems, that had surrounded them. These golems were mostly made of stone, but also had several crystal sections as well, and were easily distinguished from one another by the fact that these crystals glowed different colors on the different golems. A golem with red crystals and one with yellow crystals stood on balconies on either side of the stairs where Turk and Smith were, while a blue one stood on top of a bookshelf near Shimazu, a green one came around a corner to confront Zelgadiss, and a white one stood on a bookshelf in between the two groups.

     It immediately becomes clear that these golems prefer to fight using magic, as the red golem opens up with a Flare Arrow spell that launches a flurry of fire bolts at Turk and Smith, who manage to mostly dodge that attack. The yellow golem then casts Bomb Di Wind to try and knock the two off the stairway, though they manage to resist the burst of wind created by the spell. Zelgadiss notices the pattern in the golems’ abilities, and tries to electrify the blue golem with a Digger Volt spell. Turk also realizes that the golems’ color represents what type of elemental magic they use and immediately focuses his attacks on the yellow golem, fearing that it may be able to cast lightning spells. Mr. Smith joins in, and the two of them pick this one apart before it can do anything else of any relevance. Shimazu enter into a running battle with the blue golem, who attacks him with ice spells, while the green golem engages Zelgadiss with earth magic. The white golem hits Turk with a shot that not only deals damage, but drains his energy and temporarily weakens his soul. Mr. Smith steps in to get the white golem off of Turk, while turns his attention to the red golem, realizing just how problematic that fire magic could be in a library. Meanwhile, Zelgadiss, after avoiding another earth attack hit his opponent with a Freeze Brid spell to encase it in ice while he prepared for a more damaging attack. Mr. Smith, in hid duel with the white golem, had brought it to the point where it decided to focus solely on defense, and raised a glowing white force field around itself. Smith looked at his weapon, realizing that he didn’t have enough shots left to finish this opponent, and turned his attention to Turkquoise’s fight. Turk had dealt a fair bit of damage with his arrows while also avoiding the worst of a flurry of fire attacks being launched at him via a Rune Flare spell. Smith exchanged his rifle for a black-bladed katana, which seemed to almost radiate darkness, and leaped down to finish of the red golem up close. Between his own strength and the sword’s power, it took only two blows to finish the job, but he had to quickly jump back, as the golem exploded upon death. Shimazu, still in a running fight the blue golem, tried to us Grasshopper to lay a trap for his pursuer, and while it noticed the trap and didn’t step on it, its hesitation gave Shimazu an opening for a damaging head shot with Lightning. The hit staggered the golem, who was them blindsided by a couple of Turk’s arrows, causing it to power down and fall apart. Zelgadiss, having empowered his sword with an Astral Vine spell, moved in and dealt a devastating blow to the green golem. When it tried to retaliate with a crushing melee attack of its own, Zelgadiss was unphased by the force of the blow, catching it on his left arm swinging his sword for a finishing strike. He then turned to the still-defending white golem and cast a Flare Lance spell, shattering its shield and forcing it to retreat with a teleportation spell.

     The group gathered together, having defeated their enemies and preparing to continue searching the massive library. However, there was a sudden rumbling that filled the room, and the crystals on the ceiling changed color to red as a large magic circle appeared before the party, summoning yet another golem, this one more than twice as large as the previous ones, and with black crystals outlined with a hint of red. Zelgadiss leaped back and blue energy started to gather in his hands as he began the incantation for his most powerful spell. Mr. Smith then jumped forward, grabbing on to the golem’s arm from below and swinging up to stand on its shoulder, before then kicking off and jumping back down to the party, ans as he did so, however, the golem’s arm fell to the ground, appearing to have been cut cleanly off by something. Shimazu then managed to find a weak point on the golem’s body with his sniper shot, dealing a fair bit more damage to the behemoth. Unfortunately, Turk was unable to do any relevant damage in melee as it began to raise its remaining arm and the glowing runes indicating a spell being cast appeared before it. A large and very complex magic circle made of dim silver light appeared int he area surrounding the group, and as the runes finished appearing before the golem, the circle grew brighter, building up energy, and then in an instant, it dissipated, having no visible effect. The original trio was surprised and confused, but Zelgadiss realized what had happened, and even stopped casting his spell. As he finished it off with a weaker Astral Break spell, causing it to collapse to the ground, he explained that the black magic which the golem had tried to use was based on outdated information that was no longer valid. The spell it was casting was called Ragna Blast, and was powered by drawing power from an extremely powerful High Rank Monster called Hellmaster Fibrizzo. This Monster had semi-recently been destroyed by an extremely powerful sorceress (*cough*maincharacter*cough*), and spells based on his power could no longer function.

     The party didn’t have much time to celebrate their victory, however, before they noticed another major problem. There was a low humming noise coming from the fallen golem, and the slight red glow that had been present on its black crystals was now slowly becoming brighter and more pronounced. They all realized that this was probably a very bad thing, and Zelgadiss shouted for them to run. They used just about every method they could muster to get up the stairs as quickly as possible, and Zelgadiss led them out of the ruins just as they felt the shockwave of an explosion behind them, and many sections of the ruins collapsed. Disappointed that they didn’t find what they were looking for, the party decided to head to the nearby village to rest up and find supplies. When they mad it into town, however, they realized that none of the main trio had any of the local currency, and Zelgadiss was running low on funds as well.

     Their original plan for dealing with this problem was to try and find work with the local inn keeper, but a mysterious man in a black outfit, complete with a black cloak, stopped them. He said that he had another job for them. One that he claimed was more fitting for “adventurers” like the party. The party, and Zelgadiss in particular, didn’t really trust this man at first. His plan was to attack a massive bandit stronghold, one that was said to be so dangerous that nobody who has ever gone after it has ever come back. While the party was less phased than some might expect by the menacing description, Zelgadiss was more concerned as to why someone would want to take a risk like attacking this place. He was certain that this man must be after something very special, and probably very powerful, to be taking such a risk. The man admitted that he was looking for something powerful, no saying exactly what it was, but claimed that there was also something in that fortress that Zelgadiss wanted as well. He mentioned a manuscript of something called the Clair Bible, a tome said to hold all possible magical knowledge. This truly caught Zelgadiss’s attention. The information he sought, the ability to transform himself back into a human, was surly held in the Clair Bible, and possibly in this manuscript of it, but he was still wary. He said that this would not be the first time someone led him to one of these manuscripts, only to steal it away at the last second. The man assured him that he had no such intentions, and Zelgadiss reluctantly agreed to go along with this mission.

     And so the party, now with this new face aboard, began to plan their assault. The man said that he had already scouted the outer sections of the fortress, and how heavily guarded various sections were. It was then that Shimazu suggested that they try entering through a window above ground level. The man, and the party as a whole, agreed that this could be a good plan as long as they did it stealthily.

Orientation Day
Side Story: session 1+2

     It was the first day of a new school year at Omoikane Academy, a school whose secret purpose is to train its students as mages. The students were gathering around the announcement boards to check their class assignments. One of these students was Arcturius Raiden, the middle child of a rich family with a long tradition as mages, as well as a longstanding relationship with various law enforcement groups. Another was Markus Rigmyre, an American martial artist and transfer student who had never even believed in magic until recently. There had been an incident at a judo tournament that he had been participating in. He doesn’t even have any memory of what had happened, but shortly afterwords he received a notice that he had displayed a strong potential for magic and that he was being transferred to Omoikane Academy in Japan.

     Both of these students, despite being complete opposites, despite coming from what might as well have been different worlds, saw that they were both assigned to class 1-C. It was only on their way to the classroom that the two first saw each other. Both stood out a bit from the crowd. One wore an array of copper wires over his uniform as an essential component of his family’s traditional magic style. The other appeared as a slovenly mess compared to the students around him. His shirt was untucked, his blazer was unbuttoned, and the tie that was a mandatory part of the school uniform had been replaced with a set of dog tags from various judo tournaments. Raiden, being a very by-the-book sort of person, immediately singled this person out as a troublemaker. He confronted Markus, but Markus played the “foreigner not used to the culture” card and ultimately brushed Raiden off, Without even a solid agreement on whether they would refer to each other by first or last names.

     After that exchange was when the teacher, Mr. Tetsuo, came in and all students took their seats, with Raiden sitting right at the front of the room, and Markus choosing a rear window seat. Both Markus and Raiden took an immediate interest in him, since he also introduced himself as being the head of Physical Education at the school. After his introduction came time for the student introductions, with Raiden being one of the first to introduce themselves, and Markus being one of the last. Of the twenty-eight students in class 1-C, some of the more notable ones were as follows; Aimi Yukigami, whom Raiden recognized as being the heiress of another family of noble mages who specialize in ice magic, Alfred Meier, a foreign exchange student, like Markus, from somewhere in Europe, Daichi Kagetochi, who had an oddly sinister air to him that caused Raiden to immediately veiw him as trouble of some sort, even though he had not yet done anything, Ikari Ikioi, a grumpy-looking girl with a bad attitude, and who had dyed-blonde hair and both wore her skirt long and wore thigh-high socks, and Kagu Hachiman, who seemed a bit nervous, as if he felt out of place here, and who clearly had no more experience with magic than Markus did. Finally, after introductions and handing out class schedules, was time to pick class representatives. Both Raiden and Yukigami volunteered and were selected.

     Next was time to begin their introductions into their various classes, with the first on the list being Gym class, which also included Magical Combat Education. The gym was massive and divided into four arenas, each surrounded by raised seating, and with sub-hallways between them. Here Mr. Tetsuo revealed that the class had already been divided into three groups for the magic combat portion. The first was the Support Magic certification, which was for students who lacked either the will or the capability for combat, and was composed of twelve students, including Yukigami. The second was the Personal Combat Certification, which was for students who had some combat capability, but were not ready for either advanced techniques or full-powered opponents. this group was composed of eight students, and was where Markus was placed. The final group, composed of the remaining six students in the class, was the Full Combat Certification. This was for the students with the most skill and power in combat, and included Raiden, Ikioi, Meier, and, much to his and everyone else’s surprise, Hachiman.

     The class began with a test of the Full Combat certified students. Wards were set up to prevent any real injury from occurring during the tests. The students were then called down one at a time while the rest of the class watched from the bleachers, and an opponent was artificially conjured via magic for the student to fight, which appeared as some sort of giant lizard, and they were graded on how well they fought. Raiden was the first to go, and he decided to start by electrically enhancing his strength and speed in hopes of quickly bursting his opponent down in close combat. Unfortunately for him, the lizard creature’s hide was tougher than he expected, and his blows were dealing less damage than he would have liked, so he chose to instead back of and hit it with some electrical bolts that would be less affected by toughness of its hide. The creature lunged at him dealing modest damage, but he retaliated by pouring his electrical power into a single piercing jab that shattered through the lizard’s scales and finished the creature off. Next up was Ikari’s turn. She started by smashing her opponent under the chin with a backwards somersault kick as it charged her, followed by a roundhouse kick to the side of its head. Just as it began to recover from that, she leaped high into the air and came back down with an axe kick, crushing this thing into the floor and finishing it.

     After them, Hachiman was called down for his turn. He was more than a little bit nervous. He had never intentionally used magic in his life, and it was still a mystery as to why he had been chosen as a part of this group. The beginning of his fight was a complete disaster. The artificial monster was knocking all over the arena, while his pathetic attempts at attacking back with his fists were dealing virtually no damage to the creature, and the outcome of the fight seemed certain. However, when the creature seemed like it was about to deal the finishing blow, Hachiman shouted in defiance, and suddenly black flames exploded from his body. The flames clung to the creature, sending it into a panicked frenzy. It ran off aimlessly in its pain and slammed into the bleachers near where the class was watching, causing one of the Support Magic students to fall into the arena in the path of the rampaging monster. Just as the student was about to be trampled, Yukigami deflected it away with a magic ether barrier, and Raiden, using electrically enhanced speed, leaped off the bleachers to grab his classmate, before then jumping back up with him. Mr. Tetsuo then stepped down to deal with the situation, but before he could do anything, Kagetochi stepped forward with his arm outstretched, and a black aura appeared under the creature and it was crushed in place, and expired. After all of this, Hachiman still sat there, clearly shocked and flustered at what had happened, with the floor within several meters of him being scorched and burned and with bit of black fire still burning on his body, though he barely seemed to notice them.

     After this incident, Mr. Tetsuo decided it would be best to postpone the remaining tests until the arena had been repaired. Aside from the burnt area around Hachiman, the creature had damaged the base of the seating area in ts rampage, and the floorboards had been badly damaged in the area where it had been crushed, not to mention the damaged floorboards from when Ikioi had crushed hers. While the repairs were taking place, the other two groups were asked to move to two of the other arenas for their own tests. The students in the Personal Combat section faced off against wooden training dummies that had been animated by magic. Markus was slightly concerned about how well he’d fare, being unable to use magic himself, but it quickly became apparent that with the holds he had learned in judo, these dummies, without any special properties, weren’t all that hard for him to beat.

     After that came the introductions for all the other classes. Math seemed pretty normal, aside from the occasional mention of how certain forms of magic could make us of what they were learning. History was slightly different in that it had a lot to do with various famous historical mages and how they affected the evolution of magic and mage culture as a whole. Language Arts was much like math in that the only real difference from the norm was the occasional explanation of the importance of language in many forms of magic, both in actual word-based magic, as well as magic using incantations as a mnemonic device. Science was probably the most different, since the understanding of magic can change some fields of science at their core, as well as create entirely new fields to study.

     Finally, came time to tour and select electives and after-school clubs. There was many to choose from, pretty much anything that one could imagine, within reason, most being related to a particular form of magic. In the end Raiden decided he was interested in taking a class on use om magic runes and scripts, and was also eager to jump right in to a class on artificing. Markus, on the other hand, chose a class on the traits, behavior, and countermeasures for supernatural creatures, as well as a class on the methods and application of rituals in magic. As for clubs, since both of them had a background in martial arts, they bot ended up selecting the martial arts club, though Raiden had also been tempted by the track and field club as well.

The Start of a Strange Adventure
Main Story: session 2

     With all three main characters having now arrived in the Junction, they looked around at this new location and awkwardly introduced themselves, still confused at where they were. They each initially assumed that the ones that arrived before them might know what was going on, but after learning that this wasn't the case, they all decided to take a look around.

     This place appeared to be some form of ruin, filled with many, many rings of carved stone doors, amongst which were two particularly large doors at either end of the ruins. These over-sized doors were bound in equally over-sized chains. Seeing this, Turk immediately decided that he wanted to try to break through these chains. After watching him try, and fail, to do this for a couple minutes, Mr. Smith also decided to join in. Shimazu, in the meantime, simply sat and watched them, until he suddenly heard what sounded like another door opening, several peoples’ footsteps running through, and someone shouting orders.

     The three of them immediately stopped what they were doing and prepared to face what they knew was likely to be a group of hostiles. Shimazu and Mr. Smith hid behind a door and waited while Turk drew out his weapon and stood at the ready. What eventually came into view was a man in a suit wielding a pistol. He called out to his allies and began to fire, but was immediately shot and killed by Mr. Smith, who was suddenly carrying a laser sniper rifle that had not been visible on his person before. More grunts soon showed up, but were also dispatched rather quickly by the trio. It was soon after that the leaders of these thugs arrived, and while they didn’t survive long either, they did do some damage before going down, leaving Turk badly injures by a shotgun blast to the gut.

     While they were able to provide some basic first aid, Turk needed to see some sort of doctor. Deciding not to go through the door that the people with guns had just come out of, and all having reasons not to go back through their own doors, they instead decided to search for any other door that would open for them. They eventually found one, marked S12-1-07, and Smith and Shimazu went through it to find themselves in a dark stone room. They quickly came to the conclusion that they were in some sort of ruined building or dungeon, and, after looking around for a bit, they found evidence that someone else had been through here recently, having left chalk marks on the stone wall. They followed in the direction that the person had gone and, after nearly an hour, were able to catch up to him.

     The person they found was a man Had a sword at his hip and was dressed almost completely in tan, including a hooded cloak, gloves, and a piece of tan cloth pulled up to cover his face, leaving only his eyes and a tuft of spiky blue hair visible. He was understandably suspicious of, the two people in what he considered to be strange clothes coming up from behind him while he was so deep in an ancient dungeon, but after they explained that their ally was injured they were eventually able convince him to help them, albeit under the condition that they would have to help him in return.

     The stranger introduced himself as Zelgadiss, and after talking to him it quickly became apparent that they were now in a world where magic was the norm. Fortunately, however, when he took a look at Turk’s injuries, it did seem that he was at least familiar with black powder weapons. He used a healing spell to help Turk’s situation, but wasn’t able to heal him completely in one go, saying that he would need some bed rest to fully recover. However, it was now the trio’s turn to hold up their en of the bargain and assist Zelgadiss with his objective.

     Zelgadiss explained that the ruins that the trio were now in had belonged to an ancient kingdom that had disappeared centuries ago. This kingdom treasured magical knowledge above all else, and many of their left over ruins, this one included, were believed to contain hidden libraries full of forgotten magical lore. Zelgadiss himself was interested in finding one piece of knowledge in particular that he suspected might be hidden in one of these libraries, though he elected not to say exactly what that information might be. In any case, the trio had agreed to help him find, and safely make it to, the library hidden in these ruins.

     After continuing down the same path that Zelgadiss had been following earlier, and regularly stopping to search, they had just found a secret stairway heading down. And this is where we left of…

Turkquoise's Beginning
Main Story: session 1.2

     Team QRTZ was training after school hours in Beacon's training arena, preparing for the Vytal Festival Tournament, when they were approached by Ms. Goodwitch. She was there to send them out on a mission. The security network in the Emerald Forest had been experiencing some problems recently, so several teams of students were sent out to investigate the cause and facilitate any necessary repairs, if possible.

     The mission was going well at the beginning. However, as the team was patrolling along the edge of one cliff, Turk noticed some movement amongst the trees. As he warned the rest of his team, they began to see some distinctive red eyes glaring at them from the bushes. The Grimm then attacked all at once. It was a fairly large swarm. At first, they were just fighting Creeps and Beowolves, relatively easy to deal with, but soon, some slightly more troublesome opponents emerged. First, Turk found himself being charged by a Boarbatusk, which dealt a fairly solid hit, and nearly knocked Turk over the edge of the cliff. He dealt with this opponent rather well, however, using the Boarbatusk's own weight against the other Grimm, literally. He picked his opponent up by the tusks, using it as a weapon against its fellow Grimm. The fight ended, however, when a large Ursa tried to hit the party with a ground pound attack, but accidently caused the section of cliff they were fighting on to collapse.

     The team was able to employ their usual landing strategies to land safely, but this led to them all being split up. Turk had used his anchor and chain to swing himself over to a nearby pond, where he was able to use the water to cushion his fall. However, simply because he landed safely did not mean that he was safe. Just as he was climbing out of the water, several more Grimm, some of which were even larger than the ones he had faced with his team moments ago, emerged from the forest around him. Turk saw that there were some ruins built in to the cliff wall behind him and decided to head that way, planning to lure the Grimm into a trap. He planted several of his exploding arrows at the base of the stairs and, after running part way up the stairs, he waited for some Grimm to reach the arrows before detonating them. He then ran up to the top, where the entrance to the ruins was. There he saw an odd looking stone door. Suddenly, right as he started moving towards it, the door began to open, and on the other side stood a man in a suit…

Shimazu's Beginning
Main Story: session 1.1

     After watching a round of the advancement rank wars, agent Shimazu was scheduled to go out on defense duty. Things started out fairly peaceful, with no trespassing civilians to report. However, near the end of his shift, the alarms for gate activity sounded, amd two gates opened up just down the street from Shimazu. From these gates, six Trion soldiers emerged. Four of them were the standard Marmods, but the other two were a new type that Shimazu had never seen before. They looked like Bamsters whose tails and necks had been stretched out so that they looked more like a brontosaurus.

     After reporting what he saw and receiving confirmation that another team was on its way to provide backup, agent Shimazu moved to a concealed position. He waited long enough for the enemy to split its forces into two groups before engaging one of them. He fired a volley of Viper bullets from cover before moving stealthily relocating to another position. He repeated this tactic a few times, but the enemy seemed to be getting wise to his plan, and it became more and more difficult to deal serious damage. Seeing this, Shimazu broke cover and fired a more powerful Asteroid volley, hoping to deal some damage through brute force. While this plan did have some effect, it also left him exposed and the enemy Trion soldiers charged. The Marmods kept him suppressed, while the slower new type moved in to land a sweeping blow with its long neck. This attack sent him flying backwards, and he only noticed a moment too late that it was sending him flying into the gate, which was still open.

     Fortunately for Shimazu, damaging the new Trion soldier, who had been generating the portal, had caused the gate to malfunction. When he made it to the other side, rather that landing in the middle of the enemy base, as had been planned, he landed in the middle of a field some distance away. The enemy had traced the location of his landing site, however, and was already dispatching a group of flying Trion soldiers to capture him. Seeing these flyers inbound, Shimazu decided to take cover in some nearby ruins. 

     At the entrance to these ruins stood an odd looking, intricately carved door. The writing on the door morphed into English when Shimazu looked at it, and revealed some vague prophetic-sounding poem that seemed almost as if it were about Shimazu himself. Paying little mind to the prophecy, he opened the door. Inside, he found himself someplace rather different than he was expecting…

Mr. Smith's Beginning
Main Story: session 0

After his initial awakening, Mr. Smith discovered some nearby ruins containing a large amount of hidden information. After learning all that he could there, he moved on to explore the forest to the north. Here, he came across an odd door sitting in the middle of nowhere, not connected to anything. He spent some time inspecting the door before eventually opening it and stepping through. In doing so, he found himself stepping into another world, surrounded by a dome of fog with flashes of light in the distance, and filled with countless more of these strange doors. After walking around for a bit and examining two particularly large doors, he picked one of the regular sized doors at random and decided to open it…

Write your first Adventure Log post The adventure log is where you list the sessions and adventures your party has been on, but for now, we suggest doing a very light "story so far" post. Just give a brief overview of what the party has done up to this point. After each future session, create a new post detailing that night's adventures. One final tip: Don't stress about making your Obsidian Portal campaign look perfect. Instead, just make it work for you and your group. If everyone is having fun, then you're using Obsidian Portal exactly as it was designed, even if your adventure log isn't always up to date or your characters don't all have portrait pictures. That's it! The rest is up to your and your players.
